1.) I was given the name/title"Father of the American Navy"
2.) I was born in a cottage in 1745 in Ballysampson, Our Lady's Island, County Wexford. An area with a strong maritime tradition.
3.) Sadly, my father was a poor tenant farmer who was later evicted by his cruelm, British landlord.
4.) My uncle, Nicholas Barry, was the captain of a fishing skiff, and as a young lad, I was determined at an early age to follow my uncle to sea.
5.) I first started out as a ship's cabin boy.
6.) I grew to become a muscular, tall, and very well respected seaman.
